How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are a few indicators that indicate your double-glazed windows need to be fixed. Water ingress and draughts are clear signs of damage to the frames of your windows. They must be fixed as soon as is possible.
However, misting could be an indication that your window seals are in need of replacement. Replacing the seals will solve the problem and prevent condensation, draughts or leaks.
Broken Panes
One of the most frequent issues a double-glazed window face is broken glass. Although double-pane windows are much harder to break than single-pane windows, accidents do occur and you’ll want to repair a broken window as soon as is possible.
Get rid of any glass fragments that might be in the frame. Wear gloves and eye protection while removing the glass because it is extremely sharp. Once the shards are removed, check the floor of your home for extra pieces of glass that may be left. Also, it’s recommended to look for any hooks of metal that could be holding the panes together and pull these out also.
Once the glass has been removed, you will have to take off the old glazing compound (small fasteners that hold the glass in the frame of the window) and replace them with new ones. It’s a lengthy procedure that requires some tools. These include latex glazing putty; metallic glazing points; pliers; heat gun; and a putty knife.
It is recommended to begin at the top and work your way downwards when removing the old points and glazing compound. This will ensure that you don’t end up getting any of the sash’s wood or paint stuck to the tool. Also, if you do end up removing a portion of the sash’s wooden pieces, be sure to employ a chisel, or a utility knife instead of a chemical stripper, because this could cause damage.
After that, sand the bare wood. Once it’s smooth you can apply the oil of linseed or a clear wood sealer to shield it from water and further damage.
You can use some quick fixes to fix a cracked double pane window. But these fixes will not repair the damage and should only be used as an interim solution. The use of a silicone caulk may help seal the gap, but you need to ensure that you choose a high-quality caulk and adhere to the correct application techniques.
Condensation
If you notice moisture or mist between your double glazing glass panes, this means that your window seal has failed. This can be a serious issue as it stops the insulating gas or air from getting trapped between the two panes.
Fortunately, this issue can be fixed by a double glazing expert. The window company will take out the window sash as well as the IGU (insulating unit) to correct the issue. Then, a new gasket will be blown into to create an airtight seal to prevent condensation from occurring in the future. They will also employ a drying agent to help the area dry out and stop the condensation from recurring.
There may be a fog between glass panes in double-glazed windows, if the frame has changed position over time. This could break the seal. This can be a serious issue, since windows that are not functioning correctly and lose their energy efficiency.
double glazing window repairs is possible to replace a double-glazed window’s glass, however, this can be costly and is usually only required in the event that the window is beyond repair. If you’ve noticed the signs of a problem with your double-glazed windows and you’re still within the warranty period and the window is still in good condition, it might be possible to have it fixed for free or at a reduced cost.
Check your warranty terms before making contact with the company to determine whether they can solve the issue without having to replace the entire window. This is a much cheaper alternative than purchasing and installing brand new double-glazed windows and it’s also better for the environment!
Broken Locks & Handles
When your window handle is broken or difficult to open, it can be a major problem as it hinders you from using your windows. This also gives burglars the opportunity to break into your home. There are several options to address this issue but the most effective solution is to speak with a uPVC professional. Based on the severity of the issue they are able to usually come and repair it for you, or at the very least, provide you with an alternative handle.
There are many different types of window locks, however the most popular is the Maco or Mila lock, which can be found on the majority uPVC frames. These locks lock with rods that resemble bayonets, which could easily be jammed. If this occurs, the handle’s nose will be stuck in the popped out position and won’t be able to return to the locked wedge. This can be a frustrating issue, but it can be resolved with just a few steps.
To fix the issue you must first remove the handle, which should be done with a screwdriver. After you have removed the handle, you’ll be able to see the screws that attach the lock to frame. After the screws have been removed, you can try to grab the bolts with the help of a wrench or a pair pliers. If this does not work then you can place the tool between the frame and the window (the gap may differ between the two windows) and make an “u” shape with your fingers to grasp the bolts.
You can shut your window by adjusting the handle back to its closed position if in a position to release the bolts for shooting. However, it won’t open again with the handle, since the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) is most likely to be defective. It is possible to replace the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) without the shoot bolts so that the window can be opened with the handle.
Broken Hinges
If your uPVC window hinges aren’t longer operating smoothly and smoothly, you might need to repair or replace them. It could be that the window was opened too forcefully, or that the hinge snapped. Or, they may have a flaw. It’s simple to fix the hinge, so you don’t have to buy new windows.
Take off the hinges. To do this, unscrew the screws that attach the frame to the hinges. After the hinges are removed then you can replace the boards with plywood that has been cut to the correct size. Make sure that the plywood is larger than the original one to ensure it is able to support the weight of the window when it is closed and open. You’ll also want to use wood filler to ensure that the hole left by the old hinge is filled completely and will not leak or break in the near future.
After you’ve filled holes and replaced the hinges, then you’ll need to paint the doors. Make sure you use a high-quality paint to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Once the paint is dry it is possible to reconnect the window. Tighten any screws that are loose.
Regular maintenance is also important for hinges on windows. Regularly cleaning the friction stay track and lubricating the hinge mechanisms will ensure they last longer. You can also use a wood preservative to protect them from the elements, which will help to stop rust and keep them looking good for as long as is possible.
